PEACE is state of being. It is internal. The space of this garden is one that encourages introspection and ritual, individual contemplation as well as a collective commemoration. That is the essence of SACRED architecture in India, France or anywhere else.
The project is a re-discovery of the Sacred space. There is undoubtedly a place for the sacred in a secular world too. This garden of peace is an ideal opportunity for that.
The design builds on compositional and spatial references from India. The planting palette responds to the spatial and symbolic proposal. An external hedge encloses the space and opens to indicate the entrance marked by 2 olive trees. The paving guides the visitor along flowering shrubs and culminates in the square court with a majestic poplar at its center. A shallow water stream runs along the edge of the central platform where visitors can pay a floral tribute to the departed soldiers. A stepped seating around the sunken court offers a moment of pause, of PEACE.
