Complete refection of the Chandanwadi Crematorium on the footprint of the old and delapidated facility. Opportunity to improve the general standard and experience.

The design provides silence, serenity and dignity that was wanting in such municipal facilties in Mumbai. It completely transforms the expeirience. The external form evokes the peaks of Mount Kailasa. The interior space is a continuum under a single facetted parametric roof that symbolises the equality of all beings under the  open skies and the ultimate reality.

Passive design startehies ensure all spaces are naturally lit and ventilated. The planning manages to provide 3 prayer halls that are operationally autonomous and honour the privacy and solemnity of the visitors during the rites. These are organised around a skylit courtyard for fluid movement. The furnaces are PNG powered for better environmental performance and to mitigate pollution in a dense residential precinct.
A challenging project executed in 2 phases for part of the facilty to remain in operation for public including during the pandemic. To the roof frame and roofing is metal to minimise inconvenience during construction.
