RSA was a laureate of an invited competition for a complete design and project management mission to renovate and extend the historic French high school in the heart of the heritage precinct in Puducherry. Works included renovation and adaptive reuse and upgrade of existing facilities, playground and extension for new premises.
Design confronts the inherent contradiction between conserving the built heritage and the institution's renewal. It is an architecture for ‘education,’ creating opportunities for dialogues with nature, community and self. Each new classroom is different and distinct - facilitating the appropriation of spaces by user groups. Three existing trees on the site direct the design. Passive measures to reduce heat gain and promote non-air-conditioned use off-peak summers.
Scope of Service RSA was appointed for a comprehensive design and project management mission from conceptual design, scheme design, statutory approvals, design development including landscape, structural, interior and MEP design, preparation and management of tenders and contracts and design and project management during construction.
Notable features Design confronts the inherent contradiction of the project to respect the heritage conservation guidelines and mark a renewal of an historic institution. Discreet intervention in the historic buildings to improve infrastructure while protecting the integrity of the existing structure.
